Paper 3 essays are marked using markbands which can be found in the IB History subject guide pages 81 and 82. Examiners will also have indicative content of what they might expect to see in the essay.

The grid below is a breakdown of the IB markbands to make them clearer and more student friendly.

Markbands for Paper 3

The markbands for marking Paper 3 essays are set out here in a way that makes them easier to read. It is a good idea to give students this grid so that they can see how their essays are marked. They may want to mark their own essays first using this grid - ticking the box for each of the criteria to see which bands they fall in. The idea is that we are looking for 'best fit', so not every box within a band has to be ticked in order for the student to get a mark in that band.

Once the markband has been decided on, start in the middle and then move up or down according to how well the student has performed within that markband.
